Trolls, Meatheads and My Mom
Back in my uber-geek days, I used to hang out in IRC chat rooms. These were places were fellow geeks could hang out in different topic based rooms, swap stories, MP3’s (when it used to be badass) and generally connect with others.
Everytime, bar none, he would appear. The troll:
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. (wikipedia)
Usually this sorry excuse for a human being would type something like “Your mom is hot” or “That’s what your mom said”. (the irony of this is that the troll usually resides in his mom’s basement, and is horribly, horribly alone)
Nowadays, trolls have moved into the social media stream, leaving nasty blog comments, sending meathead tweets or insulting Facebook comments.

I had to look-up "self prophetic"
How do you deal with them? How do I deal with them? (and why am I asking myself questions?)
Here are some tips to get you out of the troll spiral:
- DFTT: Don’t Feed The Trolls: This is by far the best piece of advice I ever received back in the day. I was getting pissy about a guy baiting me in a chat, and someone sent me a private message with that line. Trolls feel horrible about their lives, their haircut and are angry that a bowtie has not become acceptable attire in society. And they are hungry. If you don’t feed them, they eventually go look for food elsewhere.
- Don’t Expose Them: I’ll admit, my first reaction to these jackasses is to reply back with my sharp wit, but never forget this: If they tweet something to you, only their followers will see it (and they usually have 20 followers, my mom not being one of them, contrary to their apparent liking of said mom). BUT if you reply, if you take the bait, you now have the tweet on your main profile page, feeding the troll exponentially! Not only do you give them the satisfaction of being fed, but you’ve also given them a platform to be exposed to all your followers. The pic above was a tweet sent to me yesterday, I didn’t reply, I just blocked and went on with my day. Sure, I don’t like seeing it, but found it kind of funny and it isn’t entirely false
- Pick Who Gets Your Emotional Currency: For a detailed explanation of Emotional Currency, go here, but in a nutshell, you only have so much emotion to go around. It should be spent on people who value it, who value you, not some douchenozzle that just finished a 36-hour bender on World of Warcraft and is pissed his wizard lost an epic battle on the island of Corinthian. There are way too many incredible people in this world, and Twitter especially that are worth your time.
- Realize Where They’re Aiming: It is their lack of self-esteem that brews the hate. It actually has nothing to do with you. Do they know you? Do they have tea and crumpets with you? No. So screw em.
This isn’t about living in a bubble and only listening to happy things. Constructive criticism is one thing, being an asshole is another.
You’re worth more than troll bait. Don’t listen, don’t acknowledge. Just be you, and do it at the highest level possible, because I think you rule.

Great article – I didn't realize those guys had a real term, I just thought they were internet bottom feeders. I like the term troll much better.
Do you distinguish between real criticism and Trolls or are all negative comments seen as coming from such people? I would hate to think that constructive criticism was dead as otherwise we would all go around thinking we were right about everything all of the time with no other opinions mattering leading to a very arrogant self righteous world???
Excellent blog…and to add a few thoughts.
In this ever-connected world, we need to be particularly careful about who we spend our “Emotional Currency” on…but this phrase helps me cement it.
When one gets a nasty/snarky email on the blackberry on a Sunday morning from a colleague/boss/client, just think about how much you are willing to commit to it at that time in terms of emotional currency…don't just leap into reviewing, analysing and replying to it.
A couple of years ago I found myself enmeshed in “feeding a troll” via back and forth email while taking the family around Legoland in Carlsbad.. in hindsight.. terrible use of emotional currency..I was upset by the emails, and, worse, noticeably emotionally detached from my wife and kids when I should have been “in the moment”.
We live and learn !
This is a great blog and very good advice. I have fallen into the troll trap many times myself but have finally learned to bite my tongue (typing fingers?).
Thanks for this.
@timrs2001
I like this post – especially your use of the underutilized word “douchenozzle”.

This post was mentioned on Twitter by unmarketing: Trolls, Meatheads and My Mom (new blog post for u) http://bit.ly/1zDglA...
Yeah, you're right. It's not thick skin you want. It's magic healing skin. I'm tender, too. I used to feel the sting and I healed that part. I know who I am: I care, I try and I give out as much love and good stuff as I can. And, sometimes I make mistakes.
Trolls sometimes hurt my feelings, but my soul? Who I am? Nobody can hurt that because it is a shining ball of love. As long as I keep composting the sh*t, trolls get love back. And when I am tired, I ignore them.
Erm…..Am I the only person who sees the irony in a whole blog post and 100+ comments about NOT feeding a troll?
And in the troll's defence Scott, you know you CAN be an annoying blabber mouth on Twitter, as can I, Brogan et al when we get the bit between our teeth. However, you do frequently redeem yourself, and I hope I do occasionally.
Note: I couldn't be bothered to look up self prophetic.
The point of the post was to encourage people not to let a troll get them down and so they don't feel alone. It worked.
I don't think Brogan or you is an annoying blabbermouth. You're entitled to your opinion though.
OK, honestly? I'm just testing my Disqus profile because I'm pretty sure their computer elves want me dead.
But while I'm here I'll say that nobody says “meathead” enough. Well done, sir.
[...] I don’t know if there is one. Now it’s 305 am. I’m guessing Jack will be up in about half an hour for his standard middle of the night “where the fuck is my mother?” I can’t sleep. I’m not tired. I’m confused. I’m hurt. I’m upset that I’m not saying all this right. But I don’t want to put it off until tomorrow because by tomorrow, I’ll be back to wearing my business hat. I’ll be back to saying don’t feed the trolls and telling myself to keep a tight budget on my emotional currency. [...]

I really liked the concept of “emotional currency”, even if I'm feeling a bit typecast as a World of Warcraft player. A friend of mine asked me a while ago “who lights up when you come into the room?” The point was to spend your time and energy on the people who value you, what some bloggers call their “Right People.” I'm finally learning that it's ok to do that with work, too. To simply insist on working with people I care about and enjoy.
Your last point is important. They're not really aiming at *you* anyhow, because they don't care about you. To a certain degree, they're not really even aware that you are there, as a person. If they did, they wouldn't be spewing hate.

LOL @ “douchenozzle”
Thanks for the post. I was feeling bummed when a troll mentioned I was a spammer so I really appreciate your advice. As a side note, I emailed Elizabeth right after I got the comment (have seen you recommend her before) asking about how many tweets per day is an acceptable number. She emailed me back within 5 minutes with great advice on the art of tweeting…
“it is not about the # per day but what you are tweeting & engagement.
so for example, have most of your tweets (80%) be about other people, either RTs of their stuff or @ replies (a conversation)…”
Thanks again for sharing. Love your blog and your tweets.

One of your best posts yet (for me anyway!). I actually watched this in several places w/several people this week. Something in the water??? In fact, I created quite a stir on my facebook page after post my quote of the day “Nobody cares how smart you are if you are a jackass”!
In any case, I agree w/you ElizabethPW, etal – LOVE the emotional currency!
In writing my book tonight, I wrote that “no matter what you do, somebody isn't going to like you! Even Mother Theresa had criticizers!”
In fact, if nobody dislikes what you say, you probably aren't saying much that matters!
That being said, there is a line between healthy debate/discussion and recognizing those that just want to suck the life out of you! The 'currency' will help me in finding that line! thanks!
(Best part is, trolls & jackasses give us great blog fodder!:)
Great reminders. Should also work in traffic for some of us.
Un-Troll Whisperer
Excellent and hilarious as always Scott. And a new word to boot – “douchenozzle” – LOVE it!
Always amazes me how this realm can attract such bitterness – but guess its always out there! Shocking that not EVERYONE loves me!!! hehe
[...] subject… reading it was like listening to angels sing. If you ever have issues with trolls, this is a must-read. Oh, and if you hate trolls as much as I do, you’ll love my fave youtuber Ray William [...]
Right on man! Flaming is just cyber-bullying or for people who project their short comings on others. I read a whole article on it. http://bullyonline.org/related/cyber.htm
Your tip #3 is correct, only if Emotional Currency is finite for everyone….
I thought that trolls were more people who kind of stalk a site/forum/blog that they have no business commenting on. They are also people who claim to be someone who they are not. Example: a person claiming to be a business owner, who in fact does not exist. Or someone claiming to be pregnant on a pregnant womens forum who is not pregnant.
Am I wrong? Or is this just another aspect of the troll?
Thanks a landlord it! I acquired yet some insight. Life is so colorful, we should be able to live in, such as Korea and honor the planet.
